The next big thing in the world of computers is probably going to be voice recognition. Of course, there are many persons who are of the opinion that voice recognition is the tried and tested affair and is of no use whatsoever. It is far too complex for technology to handle today. Well, technology can improve as time progresses. Hence, only a very shortsighted person will presume that voice recognition can no longer change the way we interact with our computers.
The biggest problem with voice recognition was that it consume too much processing power. A person using a voice recognition software application to chat with his or her computer would have to stop all other activities until the program was closed. Today, it is possible to use voice recognition software applications without making any changes to other activities on the computer. How?
Well, processing power has increased. With high speed internet connections, you can even use voice recognition through cloud computing. The words that you speak will be transmitted on the internet and may make changes to the operation of a computer situated far away from you. It is no different than conversion of audio, video and data into packets for transmission through broadband internet.
The implication of such a technology is staggering. A teacher sitting in a classroom in London can give instructions to a student living in a village in India. A manager sitting in Australia can interact with his superior in America. This can take place not just through direct interaction but also through voice recognition where words are converted into text.
While it would be difficult to imagine a world where there is no typing on the keyboard, one can safely say that the developments in voice recognition will ensure that we use our voice as the primary mode of communicating with our technological devices.
